The Great Rupert (1950)

The official star of this film is funnyman Jimmy Durante, but the show-stealer is a dancing squirrel named Rupert (a product of stop-motion animation). With the help of some timely cash, the squirrel rescues Durante’s family from a grim Christmas and becomes their guardian angel. The movie features Durante singing “Jingle Bells” and other familiar Christmas songs in his inimitable style.

The Lemon Drop Kid (1951)

Damon Runyon supplied the story for what turned out to be one of Bob Hope’s finest film roles. Hope plays the Lemon Drop Kid, a two-bit hustler in debt to a gangster who wants his money back right away. So Hope cons his fellow con artists into posing as street-corner Santas to raise the money for him. Along the way, the movie features the premiere of the classic holiday song “Silver Bells.”
